Redesign of Yamaha’s app MyRide, with focus on expanding Yamaha’s community and increasing user engagement

What if a riding app could capture not only the route, but the actual feeling? Behind every ride there is more than speed and distance; there is a human need for community.

Overview

In this project, we reimagined Yamaha Motor’s app MyRide to turn every ride into a shared experience. By enhancing usability and adding engaging social features, we brought the rider community closer together by putting the thrill and freedom of motorcycling at the heart of the digital experience 🏍️

Challenge

Yamaha provided the following brief: “We’re looking to evolve our native app, MyRide. How might we increase user engagement and build a stronger community of motorcycle enthusiasts who share a passion for riding? For many, this isn’t just a hobby – it’s a lifestyle. We want to give users better ways to experience, document, and connect through their rides.” This brief wasn’t just about usability; it was about emotion, identity and community. Our challenge was to redesign MyRide into a more immersive and social experience that reflects what motorcycling truly means to its users.

Process

I apply Design Thinking to guide my process. It’s never linear, but iterative: shaped by testing, feedback and continuous refinement to ensure solutions that truly address the core problem.

EMPATHIZE

We defined three key personas based on our research insights. These helped us pinpoint different rider mindsets.

Building on our insights, we brainstormed ideas together and I created early low-fidelity wireframes to explore potential solutions.

We brainstormed concepts like immersive route visualizations, journaling and social sharing.

The idea that stood out was storytelling: tools for riders to capture and share the feeling of their rides. This shifted the app from a data tracker to a community-driven experience.

We tested features such as live ride tracking, route visualization and social sharing to foster community connections.

DEFINE

PROTOTYPE

In short, MyRide felt cold and uninspiring, which kept users from engaging with it. The core insight was that motorcycling is driven by emotion, not just data and performance. Existing apps fail to capture this experience.

Riders talked about freedom, adrenaline and community – none of which were reflected in the current app.

We learned that there was an interest in using a riding app, but that the current app MyRide, as well as similar apps, fell short in the engagement area.

We started with both qualitative interviews and quantitative surveys to understand riders’ needs. We reached out to motorcyclists through communities both online and offline, such as clubs and bike shops.

We brought with us all our new-found insights and grouped them together to find common themes, while also structuring pains, gains and jobs-to-be-done as the underlying tasks or needs users are trying to accomplish.

Calm Carlo, a methodical rider seeking harmony and mindfulness, Daring David, an adrenaline junkie chasing speed and challenges, Adventurous Alice, a spontaneous explorer eager to discover new routes and share her journeys.

In this phase, we developed prototypes focused on creating an engaging and intuitive user experience.

At the same time, we started crafting a visual identity that reflects Yamaha’s spirit: a forward-thinking brand for the forward-thinking rider.

We tested the prototype with riders and gathered feedback on usability and relevance. Through iterative testing, we refined the app’s features to better meet user needs, creating an experience that both engages and inspires.

Feedback highlighted which ride statistics truly mattered to users and which could be streamlined or removed to reduce clutter.

We simplified flows and emphasized storytelling to make the experience smoother and more engaging. By iterating until goals were met, we ensured a solution that truly met user needs.

Impact

We shared the final app with several users and received highly positive feedback. They found it much more appealing than Yamaha’s current MyRide, both visually and functionally. Riders with different motivations all felt inspired by the design and eager to use it. One rider with 20+ years of motorcycle experience said: “This is so much better and sleeker than the usual app! It makes me want to ride and I love watching others’ routes as videos to find new places.”
